Anderson Emanuely Urio's Biography

"Anderson advises clients to bring very good shoes, warm pants, a waterproof jacket and thick gloves. He also advises that they drink a lot of water while on the mountain."
Translated from Swahili.

Anderson started working for Duma as a porter in 2001; he has climbed Kilimanjaro several times since then. Anderson's primary responsibility is to carry clients' bags on the mountain. In addition to his usual porterage responsibilities, Anderson often makes return trips to the streams to carry water to the campsite. He pitches tents, sets up camp and helps to clean dishes and equipment after meals.

In the tourism industry, Anderson has worked only as a mountain porter. He has climbed both Kilimanjaro and Meru. He would like to continue working in the tourism industry, but would like to learn how to be a mountain cook.

Anderson's fellow porters say that he is always willing to do extra work. He volunteers to do extra work before being asked. He is also very nice and easy to get along with. He is never late to camp! Anderson's nickname on the mountain is Cha Usiku, meaning "At Night", because he likes to wash dishes late in the evening.

In addition to his work as a mountain porter, Anderson farms two acres of land near his home. He farms maize, beans, green peppers, tomato and different kinds of spinach and sells his vegetables for extra income.

Anderson likes to work for Duma because the salary is good and the sleeping tents are very warm.

Although Anderson has never been on a safari with Duma, he visited Tanzania's wildlife parks when he was a standard seven student.

Anderson lives in a rural area outside Arusha Town and is a member of the Meru tribe. He is married and has four children, Prisca, Jessica, Lilian and Joyce.
