Thomas Mambali's Biography

photo of Thomas Thomas Mambali has been working for Duma Explorer since 2006. Although his first climb with Duma Explorer was as a porter, Thomas quickly showed that he could be given more responsibility and was promoted to assistant guide and then recently promoted again to head guide.

Praise for Thomas

“I loved Thomas’ knowledge of wildflowers, mountain ecology and history…”

“Thomas was a pleasure to be around. He was very kind and spent time getting to know us.”

“Thomas explained the ecology of the mountain very well. We enjoyed having him as a companion on the trip.”

“Thomas got me up the mountain. I am very grateful.”

Thomas started climbing Kilimanjaro in 2001 as a porter. He was inspired to work on the mountain by his brother, a guide for Kibo. Thomas successfully completed his guide training with Kilimanjaro National Park in May, 2006. He is Duma’s most knowledgeable mountain guide on wildlife as he completed a one year course in wildlife management. Climbers with an interest in flora and fauna should request Thomas as a guide.

Thomas enjoys working for Duma Explorer because he feels the company looks after its mountain crew. Thomas hopes to further his education and feels that Duma Explorer will help him reach this goal. All of the climbs Thomas has led have successfully reached Uhuru Peak and he feels this is because the company treats both its staff and clients well. Thomas’s favorite climb with Duma was a group of ten women in June who all successfully reached Uhuru Peak over a seven day Machame climb.

In addition to his work as a mountain guide, Thomas also farms four acres near Arusha in Ol Joro.
