Cultural Tours
Duma arranges cultural tours around Arusha or on safari. From Arusha, day trips to Mama Ana's women's cooperative or the Maasai in Oldonyo Sambu can easily be arranged. For more details, please visit the Mulala Cultural Tourism Program page.
To include a cultural tour while on safari, we recommend these options:
- Mto wa Mbu Cultural Tourism Program near Lake Manyara National Park;
- the Maasai tribes in Ngorongoro and outside Serengeti National Park.
For those interested in an in-depth cultural tour, we recommend visiting Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe tribe. Three hours from Arusha, the Hadzabe are one of two hunter gatherer tribes left in Arusha. We recommend spending two nights in Lake Eyasi and visiting the Datoga and Hadzabe tribes. Lake Eyasi is best visited on the way to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti from Arusha or Lake Manyara National Park. Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp is the best lodge in Lake Eyasi and camping is also available. For more information on the Hadzabe tribe and cultural tours available, visit the Lake Eyasi page.
Another option is to visit the Kolo Kondoa rock art site, an interesting excursion for travelers wanting to experience Tanzania's early history. We recommend visiting Kolo Kondoa between Tarangire and Lake Manyara or Lake Eyasi during a Northern Tanzania safari.
For those interested in a combination cultural tour and hiking safari, we recommend trekking in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Ngorongoro Highlands hikes pass through Maasai villages and offer many opportunities to interact with remote Maasai communities. Hikes visit Embulbul, Nainokanoka, Empakai and Nayobi Villages and range in length from two to five days.
Duma can also arrange visits to a rural kindergarten outside Arusha. Duma financially supports the school and can organize a volunteer vacation at the school or a one day visit.
There are many cultural excursions available on the coast. Please visit the beaches page to learn more about opportunities there.
Cultural tours generally include visits to farms, schools, homes and other village landmarks. A local guide is employed to accompany your group around the villages and provide information on the culture and history.
