Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp

Mbuzi Mawe is the newest addition to Tanzania's Serena Hotel chain. It lies just north of the Central Serengeti and Duma often books Mbuzi Mawe instead of Central Serengeti lodges as it is much smaller than the Serengeti Serena, Sopa and Wildlife lodges. The drive from Mbuzi Mawe to the Central Serengeti is approximately 45 minutes.

Mbuzi Mawe has sixteen en-suite luxury tents, a lounge area, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. The camp also has 24 hour hot water and electricity, a rarity at safari lodges. While the decor of the rooms is stylish and the overall quality of the camp very good, we do have a few complaints about the property. The tents are positioned rather close together, detracting from the overall experience. Also, Mbuzi Mawe is quite close to the main road leading to Lobo, which is both a benefit and drawback. It is easy to get to other areas of the Serengeti, but the camp is visible from the heavily trafficked road. Finally, the camp has the feel of a chain, so if you are seeking an intimate luxury tented camp experience this is the not the place to stay.

Despite its drawbacks, we feel that Mbuzi Mawe offers an excellent alternative to the large lodges located in the Central Serengeti. Those wishing visit the Central Serengeti but avoid the crowds should consider Mbuzi Mawe. Another benefit of Mbuzi Mawe is that it is much less expensive than most other tented camps.

Mbuzi Mawe has internet access and welcomes children of all ages. All of the rooms have two queen beds. Mbuzi Mawe literally means 'goat rocks' in Swahili and is the name for Klipspringer, an antelope found in the Serengeti.
