THE MKOMBOZI
VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND COMMUNITY CENTER Mkombozi
was formed in August, 1999 by a group of community members led by a Tanzanian
teacher and community activist who mobilized educators, health professionals,
volunteers, and community members to assess needs of Pasua Ward near Moshi
town, and develop programs for a sustainable community center. Mkombozi
programs emphasize self reliance, skill development, and creative problem-solving
to achieve economic self-reliance and positive social change. MISSION
OF THE MKOMBOZI CENTER The Swahili
word "Mkombozi" (pronounced umm-com-bow-zee) is rooted in the
word for "liberation". The mission of Mkombozi is "to empower
community members to assess their own needs and work towards liberation
from economic, social, and political oppression and to create positive
social change." Tanzania
is considered one of the most economically poor countries in Africa ranking
140th out of 188 countries. (UNDP, 2001) The abject poverty is compounded
by the devastation of HIV and AIDS. By the end of 1999, an estimated 8.09%
of all persons in Tanzania between the ages of 15-49 were living with
AIDS, which is the leading cause of death. The average Tanzanian has a
life expectancy estimated at birth of 51 years. Mkombozi
believes that the root causes of social problems, such as AIDS, are complex
and multi-faceted. Mkombozi works towards multi-dimensional problem-solving
of such oppression by involving the community. Together, they assess root
causes, and implement long-term programs involving opportunities for education
and training, community advocacy, economic empowerment, and health and
human rights resources. PROGRAMS
OF THE MKOMBOZI CENTER The Mkombozi
Center provides many programs and services to the community. Each program
strives to provide opportunities to as many individuals as possible and
create positive social change in the community. The philosophy and programs
of Mkombozi are always evolving according to the needs of the community.
